i read this somewhere. i must have tucked it away in my mind, because i've been thinking about it a lot today. there are
always jobs that are just not fun. folding laundry, doing dishes, going to yoga when you'd rather just take a hot shower
and eat buttered toast. okay, maybe that last one is just me. the theory being, if you can't wiggle your way out of a job
(by all means, wiggle whenever possible) find something about it to enjoy instead. something to get into.
while i really wanted buttered toast this morning and not 90 minutes of hot sweaty yoga, i applied this thought and i have to admit i had a pretty great practice. now, i'm going to apply it to the three loads of laundry that need folding and see if it holds true. since, oddly enough, writing about it did not make that chore go away.
folding! laundry! hurrah, hurrah! are you feeling it yet?

if this quote from f. scott fitzgerald doesn't make your heart bigger,
perhaps this letter to his daughter will: things to worry about

i have always loved these words.
a reminder that everyone has their own struggles
and deserves a little kindness.
a little something i learned from my mom...
if you encounter a crabby, unhappy person working at a store,
or maybe a restaurant,
make it a personal mission to get them to smile.
i remember one lady, her name was birdie.
it took months to get her to smile. but it was so worth it.
i still remember her smile... 20 years later.
an amusing note on the internet and the never-ending battle to attribute things correctly:
it took a bit of digging to find the designer behind this print: simon walker
only to realize he ever-so-slightly ignored the author: plato.
maybe plato is writing an angry blog post somewhere?

just like this
July 4, 2012
we all need someone like this in our lives.
from the virtual typewriter. a site i think you will like
if you are into words and typewriters and the way they go together.
a very happy 4th of july to you.
i nearly always fell into the lake somehow as a child.
i don't see that happening today.
oh, well.

house update: it now has a few trenches. and some forms. and some concrete footings. and lots of rebar.
by the end of the week it will have stem walls. and then all the real fun begins.
it seems like we've been waiting for so long for this to really start. and now that it's going, it's almost overwhelming.
in two months, we'll be enclosed. walls and everything. god, i hope we know what we're doing. i hope we get it right.
concrete and dirt have become awfully exciting lately.
