my favorite finds this weekend were old toys.
an old fold-away tent & three stretchers sized for toy soldiers.
a survivor from the 1930s, they are such a perfectly worn piece of history.

and a set of three handmade toys from the 1940s, most likely a first project for a young girl.
quite nicely done, with just the right hints of line and shape. floppy & heartbreaking.

i hope my future children find joy in these kind of toys.
i hope they love great books so much that, when they read the words, "oranges and lemons say the bells of st. clement's" they can smell the dust in that stolen room and feel the eyes of big brother watching.
( okay, well perhaps they don't have to love 1984 quite as much as i do. but i do hope they find a friend in george orwell. )

1 notes:

  1. The tent is wonderful--I've never seen anything like it!
