eat me.*

things i like to eat that confuse other people:

 vanilla oatmeal & peanut butter:

even the explanation that this tastes like a big peanut butter cookie doesn’t deter people from eww, ick and yuck. they don’t know what they’re missing.

i’d give you an actual recipe, but i just make quaker instant vanilla oatmeal (hard to find, unless you turn to the internet. it’s actually so fantastic, i order it by the case.) and throw a spoonful of peanut butter in. give it a stir to mix the melty peanut butter in and that’s glory for you*. (health-wise, you also have whole grains and protein. can’t beat that.)

cottage cheese and tomatoes:

again, often met with disgust and sometimes faux gagging. this is strange, since it’s basically a poor man’s version of the caprese salad. but apparently if it’s not fruit and cottage cheese, it’s simply unthinkable.

dice your tomatoes. salt & pepper liberally. throw in some fresh chives. then top with cottage cheese and stir a bit. salty, cheesy, tomatoey goodness. (and good for you.)

savory french toast:

i happen to dislike syrup. it’s too sweet and far too sticky and frankly, i want nothing to do with it. which leaves me in a bit of a conundrum regarding items like pancakes (peanut butter), waffles (exorbitant use of butter) and french toast.

my solution? add a little salt, pepper and shredded cheese to the egg mixture, then a little butter & coarse salt on the finished product and you’ve achieved savory french toast. i know you’re squirming uncomfortably in your seat. but egg, butter, cheese and bread all go perfectly well together. so why is it so strange once it's called french toast?

* i could not resist the alice references. forgive me. or join me.

7 notes:

  1. The 1st & the 3rd (the peanut butter oatmeal & the savory french toast) sound delicious. Especially once you describe em that way. The 2nd (cottage cheesy tomatoes)... err... I'm not sold on. But lets chalk that one up to my lifelong dislike for cottage cheese and not a judgement on your tastes.

I, for one, am partial to double churned vanilla ice cream inside my cereal. The ice cream melts into the milk and it becomes a milk shake! Drink me.

"She had never forgotten that, if you drink much from a bottle marked 'poison,' it is almost certain to disagree with you, sooner or later. However, this bottle was NOT marked 'poison,' so Alice ventured to taste it, and finding it very nice."

I also like putting fresh cracked black pepper on popcorn. Popcorn already has salt on it. As well all know, salt & pepper work oh so well together. That sounded sorta sarcastic. Unintentional, I really do like salt & pepper.

  3. salt & pepper popcorn and salt & pepper chips are the way to go.

i'm having such a hard time picturing the cereal one... but i've never had a mad love for cereal. cereal on my ice cream kinda makes sense. at least, it wouldn't make the cereal soggy which is generally my whole problem with the thing. (i am bitterly opposed to crackers in soup for the same reason.)

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less."

"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."

"The question is,'" said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - that's all."

  4. 1. oatmeal + peanutbutter = yummy
    2. can't imagine what's so weird about cottage cheese and tomatoes together. My family ate that all the time, with green onions mixed in. Can't/won't eat it now (pesky vegan) but used to all the time.
    3. same with the savory french toast--sounds great, but can't eat it. : )
Maybe the problem isn't your foods, maybe you just need more culinarily adventurous friends. : )

  5. "Speak English!" said the Eaglet. "I don't know the meaning of half those long words, and, what's more, I don't believe you do either!" And the Eaglet bent down its head to hide a smile.

  6. I eat cottage cheese and veggies all the time. I agree with what annie said, you may just need more culinary adventurous friends.

  7. annie is quite culinarily adventurous. she whips up some crazy things in her kitchen. i'm jealous. i'm an adventurous eater, but not an adventurous cook.

food should generally be tried before denied. i was once served a salad with smoked trout, cashews, honey, cayenne and dried fruit. i was sure i would hate it but bravely soldiered on... and now it's a frequent request. the flavors just go so amazingly well together.
