little bits of light and dark. isn't life just a bit like that? sunny days and shadows and the interplay between them. we're all holding our branches aloft, finding comfort in the shade and beauty in the spaces between the leaves.

light: a bird who's waited ages for her legs | experimental feather | wrist finery | furry friends
dark: glorious weeds | a reminder | the penalty for inattention | garden bath

(it's been a long while since i've done this. i always find it telling to look back at a month this way, like flipping through journal pages. what i see is probably fairly consistent. how i see changes all the time.)

our lives are slowly overlapping

1. layered against the cold
2 & 3. four legged finds
4. a bloom becoming
5. beak work (i must find myself a better knife. there is shame in whittling with an xacto blade.)
6. a freaking front door!
7. salvaged shop find
8. bump keeps her chin up

the weather is just beginning to warm. the landscape is still skeletal and bleak. it's hard to believe easter looked like this last year. the green will come. it will.

i am a perennial observer and a rather reluctant documenter, but i've found that having a blog gives me a chance
to go back and re-observe all those ephemeral moments of loveliness i might otherwise easily forget.

1. a new found mug for morning coffee at oh, albatross
2. the wood boiler at the new house, puffing merrily away
3. bear with antique beads
4. circus bear with handmade flowers
5. wee beasties, a tiny new line in the works
6. things on the kitchen counter
7. things in the shop window
8. monkeys that are now sold, and a deer who doesn't want to leave

i confess to not getting out of the house much lately. my hermitting instincts have kicked in full force. i did manage a good antique trip yesterday. (my last attempt was thwarted by a dead battery. there's nothing more perplexing than a perfectly good vehicle suddenly imitating a paper weight.) i'm excited to unload the car and go through it all again... that bit is just like christmas morning, only i've had coffee first. winter will hopefully be behind us soon and i'll crawl out of my cave like a cranky old bear, out into the sun again.

easter

an easter sunday walk through the woods.
i so often forget to notice the world around me, lost in my own thoughts.
it can be beautiful sometimes. (in the words of world party.)

an unlikely sugarplum fairy

a fine fox, dressed in antique lace trimmed in fur, with a brocade belly

the fanciest of wild beasts.

had a great vintage hunting trip yesterday
and as always, managed to find a little something for myself.
i dragged home this antique bed, of course for a dog bed.

it has a slatted bottom held by woven roping. i'm going to need to rerope it,
but the little ones don't mind for now. and i have plans to make a larger cushion for it.

of course, there's the small problem that i've plunked an entire bed frame down
in the middle of our dining room. but the dogs aren't complaining.
they're rather used to me walking around them,
stepping over them and moving aside for them.

four legged terrors.
yours are much better behaved i assume?

i have a growing obsession with string
and antique scissors.

i didn't even manage to get all the string in one place.

this is the reason to stop at the salvation army,
even when you maybe don't feel like it.

meet my new office chair,
a general fireproofing goodform propeller.

the casters aren't original,
but hopefully i'll find something more appropriate.

saw the sweetest shepherd puppy at the dog store today.
huge ears. little knees knocking together.

there is an incredible lace dress
soaking in my tub.
frankly, i can barely wait to try this beauty on.

life is full of small excitements, you know?

dapper dog.
a scarf is rather more fetching
than your average bandanna.

bump, peeking in the corner,
is waiting for her turn.

spotted at anthropologie in santa monica, ca

too much time spent among vignettes and then you realize
you've forgotten to open your eyes to the world around you.
need to pause and let the everyday sink in.
see it. snap it. share it.

i'll try to do this more often.
